HARTVILLE –  On Thursday, Feb. 27, 16 new members were inducted into the Lake Center Christian School Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) – a distinguished honor –  and recognized for their academic excellence and representation of Christ.

The 2023 inducted members: Emma Weise, Stanley Kever, Autumn Griffith, Elsie Haught, Troy Brown, Sydney Varga, Nathan Miller, Tori Wilson, Caitlin Moyer, Luke Sommers, Nina Yoder, Sara Maarschalk, Katie Hall, Andee Varga, Luke Underwood and Xander Stokes.

Secondary Principal Mrs. Crystal Maarschalk said NHS honors sophomores, juniors and seniors who excel in the classroom and represent the four pillars of the NHS: character, scholarship, leadership and service.

“Meeting the criteria for acceptance into the Lake Center National Honor Society is a rigorous undertaking,” Mrs. Sharon Martin, the NHS Adviser at LCCS, said.

Students must first carry a cumulative 3.5 grade point average to qualify and receive an invitation to apply. Then, students must fill out an “extensive application” that is later reviewed by the Lake Center National Honor Society Teacher Advisory Council to be sure the requirements have been met, including voluntary completion of some service hours, said Mrs. Martin.

Students in NHS Serve Others

The LCCS Chapter of NHS annually logs numerous service hours, fulfilling volunteering needs in the school community and beyond. NHS members commit to no less than 20 service hours a year. Lake Center’s third year NHS members have each logged 60 hours of service or more.

Lake Center’s existing NHS members recently “tapped” the senior high students selected for membership. They later celebrated with brunch.

Lake Center’s second and third year NHS members: Jayne Barber, Alexis Joseph, Titus Mock, Taylor Tufts, Peyton Fisher, Christina Luton, Emily Miller, Miranda Bailey, Jenna Eddy, Ava Karmie, Jack Katigbak, Abigail Klein, Micah McConahay, Jordan Neel, Corban Osborne, Ava Pletcher, Sarah Stock and Micah Wright.
