Fine Arts

Band

Grades 5 – 12

Make a joyful noise! At LCCS, band is offered for students in fifth grade through high school. Students can choose from the standard array of band instruments, piano, or guitar. Programs are divided into fifth- and sixth-graders, junior high, and high school.

For those who seek to become more proficient in their instrument of choice, private lessons are available — and you don’t have to be a member of the band to take advantage of this offering. The band is a concert band, not a marching band, and concerts are performed three times each year. Students who also participate in other musical activities may earn membership in the Tri-M musical honor society.

Art Club

Grades 7 – 12

Paint, draw, or create. LCCS offers in-school art instruction to all students through eighth grade. Beginning freshman year, students have the option to choose to advance with high school art instruction (an accredited art-in-school program), partake in Art Club, or both.

Music Class/Choir

Grades K–4 & 5-8 (Mandatory), Grades 9–12 (Optional)

The spirit of song. At Lake Center, all students from kindergarten to eighth grade participate in choir. Grades K–4 this is a music class. Performances are twice a year and divided by age: kindergarten, first and second, then third and fourth grades, then fifth and sixth grades. Seventh- and eighth-graders perform multiple times per year in addition to the two standard Christmas and Easter concerts.

Once the students reach the high school level, choir consists of grades 9-12 and participation is optional. Private vocal lessons are available as well. LCCS is proud to be a part of the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) program, in which students compete in solo, duet, or ensemble pieces (requires extra rehearsal time).

Choir students are invited to Cedarville’s Music Ensemble Music Weekends each year as well. Students in grades 1 through 4 with an interest in dramatic arts may also wish to sign up for TRIBE, a show that features singing as well as theater and speaking performance.

Orchestra

Grades 1–12

String studies. Lake Center students have the opportunity to play violin, viola, cello, or bass during Orchestra, which is an elective class. Private lessons are available as well, and students are given the opportunity to perform multiple times per year, including the Christmas concert and public performances such as at the John S. Knight Tree Festival.

Orchestra students are divided into groups by grade. Junior orchestra is grades 1-4; intermediate is grades 5 and 6, junior high orchestra is grades 7 and 8 and high school orchestra is grades 9-12.

Handbells (Class)

Grades 9-12

No experience required. An exciting new course offering for LCCS high school students is the Handbells club, which teaches students to play and perform handbells. Choir students also receive an introduction to handbells during choir instruction. This musical offering gives all students a chance to succeed and perform.

TRIBE

Grades 1-4

TRIBE is an afterschool Drama Club for 1st – 4th graders! Weekly rehearsals will be held beginning in January in preparation for an April performance. TRIBE meets in the Band & Choir Room with Director Karen Franke.

Drama

Grades 5-12

Tread the boards. Students with a passion for the stage will find plenty of opportunities at LCCS. For grades 5 and 6, the (elective) drama program includes performances at chapel services.

Junior high drama students perform a musical in the spring, as do the high school drama students. Additionally, high school students also have the opportunity to perform in a play in the fall.

Technology

Music Technology (Class)

Grades 9–12

Turn up the beat. In music technology, students learn to write music and programs using technology. This program is available for high school students.

Digital Arts & Graphic Art (Classes)

Grades 9–12

Attention digital creatives. Students interested in graphic design, typography, and other digital design techniques and concepts should check out this group, available at the high school level.

Photography (Class)

Grades 9–12

Snap – click – shoot. High school students can learn to master photography skills including digital photography with this course.

Yearbook (Class)

Grades 5–8

Say cheese. Elementary and junior high students can join Yearbook, where they will learn photography and graphic arts skills.

STEM

Lake Center is proud to offer co-curricular STEM opportunities, which incorporate science-, technology-, engineering-, or math. These offerings are inquiry based and emphasize computational thinking through problem solving.

Robotics

Grades 9–12

Aye, robot. Students will learn to build robots, including manufacturing parts using 3D printers, in this club for high-school age. They’ll also have the opportunity to test their creations at robotics competitions, including at the national level.

Engineering Club

Grades 3–6

In Elementary Engineering Club (EEC), students create, investigate, and make lots of mistakes as they learn about the engineering design process and how to use it in our daily lives.

Computer Programming

Grades 9–12

Learn to code. LCCS offers instruction on computer programming at the high school level through Computer Applications class and AP (Advanced Placement) Computer Programming class.

Garden Club

Pre-K through Grade 12

Ready, set, grow. Every student at LCCS has the opportunity to nurture their green thumb through gardening instruction and greenhouse experience. Through a “farm-to-table” program, students will be able to witness the progress of fruits and vegetables from seed germination all the way to the kitchen. Both hydroponic and traditional gardening methods are demonstrated.

Math Olympics

Grades 3–8

It all adds up. Middle-grade students who choose to join Math Olympics are able to test their math skills against students from other schools in arithmetic competitions.

Special Interest

Model United Nations

Future ambassadors. Lake Center students in Model UN participate in the Malone league.

National Honor Society

Grades 10-12 Only

National prestige program. Membership in the National Honor Society requires a student to meet academic standards as well as participate in programs for well-roundedness and community service. Only upperclassmen and sophomores are eligible to participate

Gifted Program: Noetic

An extra challenge. Gifted students have the opportunity to compete in writing, math and problem solving with the Noetic gifted program.

Student Council

Grades 9–12

Learn to lead. Class government positions are available for students in ninth through twelfth grades. These students help plan school dances, including prom.

Value Reading

Reading is fundamental. In the Value Reading program, community adults or other teachers read to children for 20 minutes per week, fostering a love of reading.

Tigers and Cubs

Setting an example. Tigers and Cubs is a mentorship program that pairs high school students with elementary students for playing games, reading, hanging out, and enjoying lunch together.

Chess Club

Your next move. Students in elementary through high school can compete in chess against students from other schools.

Leadership Program

Grades 5–6

An honor to serve. Students with leadership potential are taught to be student council reps, receiving extra leadership duties and serving in leadership roles for teachers and programs. Hand-selected students only.

Academic Challenge

Grades 7–8 and 9-12

Test your knowledge. Students can represent their school in televised competitions. LCCS students have gone on to national competition, too.

Mission Trip

Grade 11 Only

Expand your reach. As part of Meeting God in Missions, seniors will travel to the Dominican Republic to offer service to residents. Work includes bringing food, playing with children, and construction. Students also will lead worship chapels.
