Volunteer Literacy Awareness Program
Volunteering, Assisting, Loving, Understanding, Equipping
Dear LCCS family and friends,
We will be having an orientation for VALUE volunteers on Wednesday, October 26th, from 3:00 to 3:45 in the library. VALUE is our literacy awareness program and stands for Volunteering, Assisting, Loving, Understanding, and Equipping. VALUE consists of volunteers (mostly relatives of students enrolled in Lake Center) that are paired with individual students to model and share a love of reading.
VALUE is not a tutoring program, in which specific skills are taught, but instead is designed as a fun, interactive approach to encouraging students to read more frequently and to develop a passion for reading. Each half hour session consists of time reading a book specifically chosen for the child based upon his or her interests and reading level, and is followed by a fun activity or game. Sessions are scheduled during classes that are already designated for reading, such as library or D.E.A.R. time.
Our belief at Lake Center is that the skill of reading is an integral part of life and a passion for reading is a blessing to carry throughout a lifetime. Thank you for your support in helping us to encourage all of our students to become avid readers.
If you would like to serve LCCS as a VALUE volunteer, please fill out the attached application.
Please contact me via e-mail or phone if you have any further questions regarding our program.
Sincerely,
Angela Kapity
